Whilst we may have just left what could be considered the most eventful year in a long time, it is safe to say, for a lot of us, not much has been going on in our social lives recently. Almost everything is shut and we are all deprived of that buzzing crowd feeling. Though many tours and live shows have been, and are still being cancelled (looking at you Glasto) music has still been flowing and it has not been disappointing. So here are five tracks that sum up a few of the many lockdown feelings.
1. Summer Anticipation: Foo Fighters – Making a Fire

They’re back! Foo Fighters just released their 10th album ‘Medicine at Midnight’ and of course Grohl did not disappoint. It was meant to come out in 2020 but, as things have been, it was postponed to 2021. ‘Making a Fire’ stands out as a happy pop rock tune and it screams summer. If all you can think about is being on a road trip again, under the sunshine, this is a song for you. Of course we aren’t anywhere near to a summer heatwave and you can’t actually take any road trips right now but this song will make you feel like you are.
2. Tired: Glass Animals – Heatwaves

Talking of heatwaves, Glass Animals recently released a track under just that name and wow does it give off summer vibes. However this one’s a little more mellow and is perfect for a lazy summer afternoon sat in the garden with friends. Again you can’t actually do that but this song will have you thinking you can. The slightly sombre lyrics layered over carefree indie pop is perfect for that lazy lethargic mood where you’re not looking to jump around with glee but equally need a jovial pick me up.
3. Reflective: PVRIS – January Rain

Another slightly sombre tune, ‘January Rain’ is a little nostalgic, a little sad, and super reflective. We may only be in February but January seemed to last forever and it was a LOT to unpack. However, this song counters all of the 2021 anxiety that has continued on from last year, Lynn Gunn’s calming voice gives a sense of reassurance and hope for what is yet to come.
4. Nostalgic: Kehlani – Can I

Nostalgia should really be word of the year. This may be the most interaction that Snapchat memories has had. Kehalni’s chorus on Can I’ mirrors this mood completely. ‘Can I/ Stop by/ To see you/Tonight?’… I mean, no but remember when visiting peoples houses was a thing? This track will have you right back there.
5. Anger: Bring Me The Horizon – Parasite Eve

Finally, the main mood we’ve all been feeling: Anger. This track specifically diverts all negative emotion to the virus itself. ‘Parasite Eve’ talks about quarantine, washing hands, and Covid-19 conspiracies. Thrown onto some heavy guitar and a strong bassline, this is what 2021 would sound like if it were a song.
